If you love Golf, Hua Hin is the place to be. It boasts 7 top courses and I was lucky enough to be playing on one of them. I was participating in the Take 5 Golf day organised by Mr Sam Sheriff, whose sport’s bar and restaurant Take 5 is located in Khao Thakiab, opposite the Amari hotel and residence.
The Golf Day was taking place at Seapines Golf course, which is a lovely looking course with several classic, picturesque holes hugging the shoreline not far along the coast from Thakiab beach.
Now I like to think of myself as being fairly adept at most activities that require skill, physical prowess and hand-to-eye coordination. Unfortunately Golf is not one of those activities. Whoever invented Golf is a sadist. It’s as if they are conducting some sort of nefarious social experiment designed to test the limits of psychological endurance. When I’m on the Golf course the chances of somebody being physically aggrieved rise 10 fold. I once played a hole so badly I had to hide. Such a shame that the beautiful air in these beautiful locations should be toxified by four-letter outbursts suitable only for the sewers.
Saying that I had a lovely day. I played quite well on the last 4 holes leaving me decidedly chipper. It’s a great game really (until your next bad shot).
When you play in the Take 5 Golf day, the bi-monthly all-you-can-eat Indian buffet is included in the price and to be honest that is what I was really looking forward to. Indian food is India’s gift to the world. I think I mentioned in another post that Thai food, in my opinion, is the 2nd best cuisine in the world. Indian is number 1. There are only 2 things I really miss about the UK and Indian food is one of them. And the buffet did not disappoint. We had a choice of 3 curries, bhajis, bombay potatoes and of course naan bread…the whole works. And it’s all you can eat. When we left my belly was as big as my wife’s and she’s 33 weeks pregnant.
The great food is complimented by Sam, his wife Pooky and their friendly staff. Even on their busiest night they both made time to say hi, how are you doing. And if you’re lucky you’ll be paid a great compliment. Nice to know I’m better looking than my Dad.
The Take 5 Golf day takes place every month. The next one is on March 15th at Palm Hills. Included in the price of 2900 baht is a round of Golf, your caddie, Golf Buggy, Indian Buffet and a free beer.
Sam Sheriff has been living in Hua Hin for 21 years. His Sport’s Bar, Take 5, has been operating since November 2015. He moved his Indian restaurant Zafran to join Take 5 in December 2016. He has recently opened a 22 room Hotel and Resort called Surf and Sand which is also in Khao Thakiab. Rooms are already available and the restaurant and grill will follow soon. An official opening is planned for the end of March / early April which is something to look forward to. Everyone loves a knees-up 🙂
